What is a boiler diverter valve?
In a combination boiler, there are a number of valves that are essential to keep the boiler operating and functional. The most important valve is the diverter valve. This opens and closes to direct hot water to your taps or central heating, depending on your choice. Which is why with a combi boiler you cant have hot water and heating in use at the same time. As soon as you turn on the hot tap, the diverter valve will instead direct the hot water to the taps, instead of the central heating system.
Problems with the diverter valve
Over time, the diverter valve can degrade, and this means that it will no longer work as expected. Common signs of this include:
- Heating but no hot water, or vice versa- this happens when the diverter valve will no longer turn, so only hot water or heating is available
- Lukewarm water- if your hot water no longer gets hot, it could be caused by a stuck diverter valve that is trying to feed both the hot water and the heating at the same time.
Replacing a diverter valve
To keep your combi boiler in full working order, replacing the diverter valve is important. However, it can be costly to order in a new diverter valve, and your order can take a few days to a week to arrive.
